How to use the overtime calculator

  1. Enter your normal hourly rate and choose your currency.
  2. Choose Weekly total and enter the hours worked this week, or choose Hours by day to enter each day separately.
  3. Set the hours after which overtime starts (40 by default) and the multiplier (1.5 for time and a half).
  4. Optionally add double-time hours. The results show regular pay, overtime pay and total gross pay.

The overtime pay formula

Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × multiplier. Regular pay is the hours up to the threshold multiplied by your normal rate. Add the two for total gross pay.

Example: 46 hours at $22/hour

  • Regular: 40 h × $22 = $880
  • Overtime: 6 h × $22 × 1.5 = $198 (overtime rate $33/h)
  • Total gross pay = $1,078

Example: daily overtime

With an “over 8 hours a day” rule, a 10-hour Monday gives 2 overtime hours even if the weekly total stays under 40. Switch to Hours by day to model this.

US federal (FLSA) overtime

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, covered non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Each workweek stands alone, and there is no federal daily overtime. This calculator's default settings (40 hours, 1.5×) follow that rule. (US Department of Labor)

  • Several pay rates in one week? The regular rate is a weighted average. Use the weighted overtime calculator.
  • Non-discretionary bonuses raise the regular rate too. The weighted calculator includes them.

State overtime rules

  • California: daily overtime over 8 hours, double time over 12 hours, and a seventh-consecutive-day rule. Use the California overtime calculator.
  • Texas and Florida: no separate state overtime law for most private employers, so the federal FLSA rule applies (over 40 hours a week at 1.5×). Choose Weekly total with the default settings.
  • Other states: some, such as Alaska, Nevada and Colorado, have daily rules with conditions. Check your state labor department.

Overtime and taxes

Overtime pay is taxed like other wages. For US tax years 2025–2028, eligible workers can deduct the FLSA-required overtime premium (up to $12,500, or $25,000 joint) from federal taxable income. Social Security, Medicare and state taxes still apply. Estimate it with the no tax on overtime calculator.

Rules vary by country, state or province, industry and contract. Some workers are exempt from overtime. This calculator shows the arithmetic and is not legal advice. Read overtime basics by country and check your official labour authority.

Frequently asked questions

How is overtime pay calculated?

Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × overtime multiplier. With the common “time and a half” (1.5×), 5 overtime hours at $20/hour pay 5 × $20 × 1.5 = $150. Your total pay is regular pay plus overtime pay.

What is time and a half?

Time and a half means each overtime hour is paid at 1.5 times your normal hourly rate. At $18/hour, time and a half is $27/hour. Double time is 2× ($36/hour).

After how many hours does overtime start?

It depends on where you work and your contract. Under the US federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees get overtime after 40 hours in a workweek. Some US states (such as California) also have daily overtime. Canadian provinces, the UK and Australia have different rules. See overtime basics by country.

Can I calculate overtime by day instead of by week?

Yes. Switch to “Hours by day” and choose a daily rule. The calculator applies daily overtime first, then weekly overtime to the remaining regular hours, so no hour is paid twice.

Can I enter hours and minutes?

Yes. Type 45:30 for 45 hours 30 minutes, or 45.5 in decimal. The note under the box shows how your entry was read.

Is this my exact paycheck?

No. It is a gross-pay estimate before tax and deductions. It also does not include shift differentials, bonuses or a “regular rate” that includes extra pay, all of which can change overtime pay. Check with your employer or local labour authority for your exact entitlement.
