How to use the decimal hours converter
To convert hours and minutes to decimal, type the hours and minutes into the first converter.
To convert decimal hours to hours and minutes, type the decimal (for example 6.4) into the second converter.
For a timesheet, paste a list of times (one per line) into the bulk converter to convert and total them.
Use the chart below for a quick lookup, or print it for your desk.
Why payroll uses decimal hours
To pay someone, you multiply hours by an hourly rate. That only works with decimals: 37 hours 45 minutes at
$18/hour is 37.75 × $18 = $679.50. Using 37.45 by mistake would underpay by $5.40. Most timekeeping and payroll
systems store hours as decimals for this reason.

Tenths of an hour (6-minute increments)
Some employers and law firms bill in tenths of an hour: 0.1 h = 6 minutes, 0.2 h = 12 minutes, 0.5 h = 30
minutes. The time card calculator can round every punch to 6 minutes
automatically.
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes = 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25 hours; 45 minutes = 0.75 hours. Then add the whole hours: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7.75 hours.
How do I convert decimal hours back to hours and minutes?
Keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. 8.6 hours = 8 hours + (0.6 × 60) = 8 hours 36 minutes.
Why is 7:30 not 7.30 hours?
7:30 means 7 hours and 30 minutes, which is half an hour past 7, so it is 7.5 decimal hours. 7.30 decimal hours would be 7 hours and 18 minutes. Mixing the two formats is a common payroll error.
What is 40 minutes as a decimal?
40 ÷ 60 = 0.67 hours (rounded to two decimal places; 0.6667 exactly). See the full chart below for every minute from 1 to 60.
How many decimal places should I use?
Most payroll systems use two decimal places. Some use hundredths of an hour or tenths (6-minute increments). Choose 2, 3 or 4 places above to match your system.
Can I convert a whole list of times at once?
Yes. Paste one time per line into the bulk converter. Use 7:45 for hours:minutes or 7.75 for decimal hours. It converts every line and totals them.
